Women on the Move (WOM) is a benefit that has honored exceptional women in the Greater Houston Area since 1985. The yearly event is a benefit for the Texas Executive Women Scholarship Fund and is organized by Texas Executive Women of Houston. Jackalyn Rainosek was the Membership VP, President Elect, President and Co-Chair of WOM from 2010-2014.
Texas Executive Women of Houston was founded in 1979, with membership including the most successful and high achieving women in Houston. In 1985, the group launched Women on the Move (WOM), which aimed to recognize 10 distinguished women in the Greater Houston Area each year. The Texas Executive Women Scholarship Fund was created shortly after the inception of WOM, and to date thousands of local girls have benefitted through scholarships, field trips and individualized mentor programs.
The WOM luncheon was spearheaded jointly by the Robert Sakowitz family and the Hobby family, both of whom were powerful business entities in the state. The Hobby family owned both the local television station and the now defunct Houston Post and used their resources to promote WOM and solicit nominations for those to be named as the highest achieving businesses women in the community. The nominations far surpassed expectations and cemented WOM as an event that promoted and honored area businesswomen, a tradition that continues today.
The Texas Executive Women Scholarship, made possible through WOM, has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to date and benefited more than 2500 girls. More than 50% of the girls who have benefitted from the program have been the first in their family to attend and graduate college. Additionally, more than 75% of the girls in the mentor programs have paid it forward and returned to mentor others in the program.
