Jackalyn Rainosek Teaches Leadership Dynamics Through Self-Help

Reviewers have described the book as a combination business and self-help text, and as one of the five most important leadership books ever written. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have set forth five basic precepts of leadership in their leadership program The Leadership Challenge, a concept and a book which sets forth the skills and traits which make for great and dynamic leaders.  Jackalyn Rainosek and Liz Cloud, co-founders of DTP Leadership in Houston, Texas in the United States, are certified masters in the instruction of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, offering leadership seminars to groups and organizations which utilize the research of Kouzes and Posner.  The program believes that leadership is a collection of skills and abilities which can be seen and heard, an idea refined from the Personal Best stories of thousands of ordinary people who revealed their experiences with the best of leadership.  Similar patterns of behavior emerged from these stories, and Kouzes and Posner found five core practices that the best leaders have in common: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.

Jackalyn Rainosek and Liz Cloud of DTP Leadership in Houston, Texas in the United States have built their leadership seminars and training programs around the precepts of The Leadership Challenge, a dynamic teaching tool for leaders developed by academicians Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner.  Their book The Leadership Challenge was first published in 1987, and over the years has sold more than two million copies.  Translated into 20 languages, the fifth edition of The Leadership Challenge was released in 2012, its twenty-fifth anniversary.  Barry Posner reflected on the emergence of the 5th edition that honing one’s leadership skills is akin to maintaining the health of the body throughout one’s life, an ongoing endeavor.  The fifth edition of The Leadership Challenge has included contemporary stories and examples as teaching tools, and is used in leadership classes at St. Catherine University.

Jackalyn Rainosek: The innovators of The Leadership Challenge

The Leadership Challenge program of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, taught by Jackalyn Rainosek at DTP Leadership Group in Houston, Texas, was born from research which spanned 30 years and over 75,000 written responses in interviews and on surveys.  The work styles and activities of humans in organizations can be assessed for skills which may be improved through the use of existing personality traits, a facet of the book The Leadership Challenge.  The importance of a unifying vision for all participants is emphasized, which will enable, through shared development and execution, team members to become more confident and more motivated.  The use of symbolic language from a leader, examples through stories and metaphoric comparisons, is an important skill which helps build cohesive loyalty to ideas and concepts through persuasion.  Inspiration in leaders emerges from the use of emotions and expressive words which invoke images for their followers, while positive thinking in a leader is passed on to others, bringing greater productivity and job satisfaction.  Dynamic leaders also exhibit strong charisma, emotional investment and honest sincerity.

Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, the innovators of The Leadership Challenge utilized the key personality traits found in the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership they distilled from their research an assessment tool which staffs of organizations can use to evaluate the leaders in their firm.  This assessment tool, utilized by DTP Leadership founders Jackalyn Rainosek and Liz Cloud out of Houston, Texas in their customized leadership workshops for communities and corporations, is called the Leadership Practices Inventory, a print and online assessment.

Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner’s book, The Leadership Challenge, which came out in its fifth edition in 2012, carefully outlines the different leadership traits identified through years of personal written responses on the leadership surveys collected.  Kouzes and Posner have researched leadership experiences for 30 years, collecting over 75,000 surveys.

Jackalyn Rainosek Follows Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Jackalyn Rainosek of DTP Leadership in Houston, Texas has made a life study of the dynamic Leadership Challenge program of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, as set forth in their original book The Leadership Challenge of 1987.  The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership identified in the program include the first, Model the Way, which sets forth the need for true leaders to model the behavior they want to see in others, visually and aurally.  The second practice is called Inspire a Shared Vision, which sets out the necessity of setting forth goals which create a vision everyone in an organization can invest in and work toward together.  Challenge the Process encourages dynamic leaders to move outside ordinary boundaries and think innovatively for change.  The fourth practice, Enable Others to Act, exhorts leaders to work for a safe environment where groups can work together, test ideas and experiment with solutions and engage each other with trust.  The fifth precept, Encourage the Heart, asks leaders to find true sincerity in their interactions with those who follow them, rewarding and praising their successes.

Psychologist and Counselor Jackalyn Rainosek of DTP Leadership Group in Houston, Texas in the United States, along with her business partner Liz Cloud, subscribe to the belief that effective leadership is learned.  Following the Leadership Challenge program of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, Rainosek and Cloud examine the different tendencies of both introvert and extrovert personalities to determine how these can be developed into the skills of leaders.  Introverts prefer one on one engagement when sharing ideas, while extroverts prefer dealing with larger groups.  Those with deep streaks of honesty exhibit the most respected of personality traits for leaders, while inspired ideas, extraordinary competency and a tendency to project their thinking into the future are skills which typify excellent leaders.

The WOM luncheon was spearheaded jointly by the Robert Sakowitz family and the Hobby family, both of whom were powerful business entities in the state. The Texas Executive Women Scholarship, made possible through WOM, has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to date and benefited more than 2500 girls.  More than 50% of the girls who have benefitted from the program have been the first in their family to attend and graduate college.  Additionally, more than 75% of the girls in the mentor programs have paid it forward and returned to mentor others in the program.
